Carcassonne is known above all as a fortified medieval town : but this rocky outcrop has been occupied by man since the 6th century BC, first as a Gaul settlement, then a Roman town equipped with ramparts since the 3rd century AD.
The old town is still lived in today. 52 towers and 2 concentric walls make up a total of 3 kms of ramparts. Except for the Chateau, the visitor can freely visit most of the Cité: The Basilica St. Nazaire, the ramparts, the lists, the Narbonne Gate, the Aude Gate and see the life of the town inside the walls.
